Sword Essentials 4 - Guard Position

The Guard Stance

Empty Stance (Preparatory Position)

  • Weight Distribution: Evenly balance weight between front and back legs

  • Purpose: Maximize agility and quick response

  • Key Characteristics:

    • Maintain a neutral, relaxed posture

    • Keep body centered and balanced

    • Keep vulnerable body parts guarded

    • Enable rapid movement in any direction

Seven Star Hand Position

  • Origin: Named after the Urso Major constellation's star formation

  • Hand Configuration:

    • Hands in an open or closed fist position

    • Arm Shape mimics the distinctive pattern of Urso Major's stars

  • Positioning:

    • Hands held at mid-chest level

    • Elbows down and slightly bent

    • Forearms angled to protect core and create quick strike or block opportunities

Barehanded Sparring Guard

  • Hand Placement: Seven Star configuration

  • Defensive Posture:

    • Hands ready to block incoming strikes

    • Palms can be open or closed into fists

    • Left - right alternately in front swiftly adapting to footwork

  • Attack Readiness:

    • Immediate capability to launch strikes

    • Minimal movement required to transition between defense and offense

Sword Sparring Guard

  • Footwork: Identical to barehanded empty stance

  • Sword Handling:

    • Sword integrated into Seven Star hand position
